Eat This While you Read That! was born of my passions for reading, cooking, and photography. I’ve been reading at the table since I was big enough to hold a book in one hand and a fork in the other. I’ve been cooking since I was a tiny blonde-headed girl, nut-brown from the sun, and standing on a milkcrate to reach the counters. I vividly recall the first full meal I made my family, when I was nine. And the German Chocolate Cake from scratch. Add to that my Dad putting a camera in my hand at the age of six, and it’s only natural I’d want to combine all those pleasures.
I also wanted to do something for my friends and mentors to thank them for the books I’ve read and loved over the years. This whole thing started out on a whim, but I’m hoping I can keep it going for a long time. I’ve read a lot of books! If you’d like to nominate an author, feel free to reach out to me. No promises, because I have to come up with a dish from them, which might not be easy.
All I ask from the authors is the name of a dish they enjoy eating, and the title of the book they want me to promote. Many authors offer me a full recipe, which I appreciate, but I also know how busy they are, so I don’t ask for more than the name. The rest of it I take from there, and magic happens along the way.

Great idea, Cedar! You did start cooking — real cooking — at an early age. And thanks to your mom for teaching you “from scratch.” I remember stopping at your house on Mothers Day when you were about eight. You and your younger sister had served your mother breakfast in bed in honor of the special day. You had prepared — from scratch — biscuits and gravy, and an egg, accompanied by fresh fruit, an appropriate drink, and garnished with a lovely bouquet of nicely arranged weeds (dandelions and such). The kitchen was decorated with flour her, there, and everywhere, accompanied by pots and pans, and measuring and mixing utensils here, there, and everywhere. Your dresses also were decorated with liberal coatings of flour. You both wore big smiles — and your proud grandma was glad she came on that day; and that your mother had taught you to cook from scratch. Happy Mothers Day, everybody!
I don’t remember this, but it makes me happy! I remember the first full meal I cooked for the family – I was nine. Maybe eight. I know Mom cooked from scratch a lot, and so did you. I can remember making some really delicious things with you, like Mussel Chowder and Croissants from scratch.

It was fun prying the mussels off the rocks, wasn’t it? If you don’t come up with enough recipes, I’d be glad to contribute.

[…] Hi, this is Cedar, and I’m moving my popular food series, Eat This While you Read That! to the Otherwhere Gazette. This series of posts featuring authors, their books, and a favorite recipe of their choice, was born from my love of cooking, reading, and taking pictures. Here’s how it works: I get in touch with an author, ask for a dish, then I make it, taking pictures as I go, and finally it’s featured along with links to the author’s work. It’s been a lot of fun so far, and if you want to find the beginning of the series you can look here. […]
