Kangaroo Pot Pie

Odd Prompts: Centipede Pie

Ok, I had an epic writing day, with almost 3500 words to finish off a story for an anthology. Then I realized I hadn’t done the prompt… so here’s a little bit of flash fiction for you all to laugh at.

She felt her jaw drop.

What did you say?” She asked after a moment to catch her breath.

“The diner has centipede pie on the menu.” He shrugged. “I was curious what it would taste like.”

“Ugh, ew!” Their companion made a fake gagging noise. “You two are the worst!”

“Well, Janice, no one asked you to come along.” Cheri rolled her eyes at Hans, who just shrugged. Their roommate was a perpetual pain, and persistent. If this didn’t stop her, nothing would. “We are going to have centipede pie, whether you like it or not.”

“Nope. Just no. Hans, stop!” Her imperious command came as he was already looking for a good parking lot to pull into, but she didn’t seem to notice that it was a conveniently quick obedience. She hopped out. “I am getting an Uber home. You two had better not come in reeking of…”

The slammed car door cut off whatever she was going to describe.

Cheri leaned forward and rested her head against Han’s shoulder, giggling so hard she was crying. “Her… her face!” She gasped.

“I, for one, am going to keep moving before she gets back in.” He reached for the shifter, and she sat up as she felt his muscles flex.

“Please do. Are we really going to have centipede pie?” She unbuckled and shifted to the middle seat before strapping back in, then leaning forward to better talk to him. Front seat would have been nice, but Janice always claimed that.

“I suspect it would taste like lobster. Or shrimp. Those are bugs, too.” Hans turned back onto the main road. “But sadly, they are too small to be easily cooked. So I’m told.”

“Darn. Now I kind of want to eat one just to find out.”

“We could get grasshopper pie, instead.” He offered.

“I’m always in for mint chocolate,” She patted his arm. “Thank you. She’s been… worse than usual.”

“Lease is up in a month,” He looked back when they stopped at a red light. “You know, we could…”

“Do not propose to me in a moving car, sir. Don’t even think about it.”

His eyes widened, then he burst into laughter, his dimples showing. “Ok, then, I won’t.”

He gave his attention back to driving. The light turned green.

Cheri murmured. “Do it over centipede pie.”
