Plot Twist

If you’re interested in a brief take on drugs in fiction, dealing with drug discovery and cancer and aging… anyway, I have an article over at Mad Genius Club today.

You may have noted there was no update last night, despite my having promised one in the morning. That’s because nothing happened. The mystery of the dog who didn’t bark in the night… only in our case, it was the sellers who didn’t show up for closing.

This whole house thing has become a saga, with twists I couldn’t put in a story because readers would make rude noises at me. I mean, sure, they’d probably believe that the first house we offered on then came back with a counter-offer higher than the listing price. And that the second house, which we actually had under contract, looked amazing on the outside, and had termite, water, and roof damage under the surface. They might believe that we’d be willing (and stubborn!) enough to try a third time, get the house under contract, past the inspection, then have the appraisal delayed so long that closing was postponed twice… especially if I explained that it was a government appraisal. So on the third try for closing, which was supposed to happen on Friday the 13th at 5 pm…

We got a text mid-morning that the sellers had been involved in a car accident, and couldn’t make it to closing. We would be told if/when they were able to reschedule.

Guh. Um. Well, ok… now what?

Now we wait. I’m really hoping it’s not serious, just that they were shaken and needed to deal with their car or something. We met them, and they were lovely people, an older couple. But there’s absolutely nothing we can do about this at this point. I mean, we know where they live, somewhat obviously, but I’m not going over there with flowers and a casserole because we met them once, and that would be weird. So we wait.

In the meantime, work continues to be demanding. The First Reader is routinely working ten hours a day, but at least has weekends off. I’m into the ‘new routine’ of working weekends, plus my weekly schedule, and that will continue for the foreseeable future. It’s not a long shift on the weekends, but it means we can’t make plans or travel to KY easily to see family. This, too, shall pass. It’s all about patience. It’s nice that at least, my job has meaningful impact in the world so I can feel satisfied about all the extra effort I’m putting out, not just ‘making more money’ in the form of overtime, although that’s nice too.

Life isn’t supposed to approach fiction in the form of plot twists. Hrumph. As I was telling the First Reader, I wouldn’t believe it if it weren’t happening to us.

    1. LOL! Not sure the First Reader and I would survive a winter in that place with the kids…

  2. Life is sometimes like that. I look back, and have a hard time believing some of the carp I did, even though I know it’s true. I was there!
