Tanager’s Fledglings is my space opera with a puppy in it, and it was fun to write. I’m currently working on the second book in the planned trilogy, and have just been talking with an editor who was kind enough to tell me that it’s a story, all right.
Eby, the puppy in question, isn’t the center of the book. But he thinks he is!

Alright, I’m screwed — gotta get it.
I had a basset Bleu de Gascogne (Gascon Blue, like a basset version of a bluetick coonhound) named Cadet. He was a fine exemplar of well-developed Gallic cunning, esp. with regard to manipulating the other dogs.
(Associating with organized rabbit-hunting footpacks meant plenty of opportunities to adopt puppies who were, in this case, “too smart to be a good packhound.” And all the oldsters got homes to retire to.)
Speaking as the editor in question… It’s definitely going to be more than a trilogy. 😀
Looking forward to the second book — I read Tanager’s Fledglings a few years ago, during a weekend in Philadelphia whilst visiting my daughter (don’t ask me why I remember this!).
