This list was born out of a question: someone wanted to know what were books we’d recommend for the young lady in his life, to save her from sparkly vampires. I was tagged in the comments, and realized that although I have several lists for boys, I hadn’t done one specifically for girls. This still isn’t specifically for girls, for that matter. Surely everyone loves reading about princesses and dreaming castles in the air? Well, ok, as a girl I didn’t. I was all about horses and wilderness survival and learning to fish, hunt, and trap. My daughters, on the other hand… the Junior Mad Scientist had a series of unicorns as a smol. She named them all Bob. So we had Mama Bob, and Squishy Bob, and Sparkly Bob, and… this list is for girls like her, who love all things pink and glittery.
As always, I posted on social media, and others suggested books they had loved, or their children did. I couldn’t make these lists on my own, and I deeply appreciate my fellow readers who help out with them. The books are in no particular order, and range from classics well-beloved, to new titles that will seem smart and up-to-date.

Smol?
Internet slang for small. say it out loud…
Thank you. I guess I’m not hep to the latest slingo.
Once the kids move out, I’ll probably fall behind.
I ain’t hep, to that step, but I’ll dig it.
While I’m not a girl 😉 I suspect that many girls would enjoy The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope.

You know, not all princess books are just for girls 🙂 Might give a discerning young man an idea of what to look for – or avoid! – in a young lady.

I love that our pink-and-glittery girl is the bruiser tomboy.
So you have someone who will fight you…wearing pink, glitter-covered shoes, and glittery pink earrings, and a unicorn shirt.
“The Princess and the Goblin” is rather good, too.
Yes, yes it is. I read a lot of George MacDonald when I was younger.
And I am reminded of:

I am a fan of Podkayne.
Belated suggestions:
The Changes trilogy by Peter Dickinson
Entwined by Heather Dixon
Fire and Hemlock, and almost anything else by Diana Wynne Jones
and another vote for The Perilous Gard!
I really enjoyed ‘Runaway Robot’ when i was a kid. IS that even available anymore?
answering my own query: only used.
Funny, upon seeing the final list I see that My Friend Flicka by Mary O’Hara and National Velvet by Enid Bagnold should have been on the list
